Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It’s a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it’s his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room. Corduroy decides that this must be home and that Lisa must be his friend. Youngsters will never get tired of this toy-comes-alive tale with a happy ending.

Steven Law and STEVEN ANDERSON LAW are pen names for Steven Anderson, under which he writes fiction and has written a weekly newspaper column, “Suburban Cowboy.” He chose the pseudonym in honor of his grandmother, Dorothy Law Crawford, who read many stories to him as a child, and was a huge inspiration to him in education and in life. His grandmother died when he was in high school and using her name on some of his writings is like a blanket dedication for all that she gave to him.

Christopher Paolini was born on November 17, 1983 in Southern California. He has lived most of his life in Paradise Valley, Montana with his parents and younger sister, Angela. As a child, he often wrote short stories and poems, made frequent trips to the library, and read widely. The idea of Eragon began as the daydreams of a teen. Christopher’s love for the magic of stories led him to craft a novel that he would enjoy reading. The project began as a hobby, a personal challenge; he never intended it to be published. All the characters in Eragon are from Christopher’s imagination except Angela the herbalist, who is loosely based on his sister. Christopher was fifteen when he wrote the first draft of Eragon. He took a second year to revise the book and then gave it to his parents to read. The family decided to self-publish the book and spent a third year preparing the manuscript for publication: copyediting, proofreading, designing a cover, typesetting the manuscript, and creating marketing materials.

Creating amazing cakes connects Buddy with the memory of his father Buddy Sr. and his extended Italian family history. His talent and passion for the family business, Carlo’s Bakery, has earned the straight-talking cake expert the moniker, and TLC TV show, Cake Boss.

The Texas Book Festival was established in 1995 by First Lady Laura Bush, a former librarian and an ardent advocate of literacy. Mrs. Bush created a task force to plan the book festival to honor Texas authors, promote the joys of reading and serve to benefit the state's public libraries. The first Festival took place at the Capitol in November 1996; the Festival has quickly evolved into one of the premier literary events in the country, annually hosting over 200 Texas and nationally known authors. Approximately 40,000 visitors participate annually in a weekend of author readings and presentations, panel discussions, book signings, and musical entertainment at the State Capitol in Austin.

Students from across the state in grades 7-12 were invited to enter a piece of original fiction, no more than 2,000 words and themed “End of Days.” A panel of judges comprised of authors, journalists, educators, and other industry professionals based their decisions on excellence in use of dialogue, imagery, character development, setting, plot, conflict and resolution. The entries were categorized into three divisions: 7th and 8th grade, 9th and 10th grade and 11th and 12th grade. Read To Lead presented the top three scorers in each division a cash prize plus a plaque.

Lisa Lillien isn’t a nutritionist. She’s just hungry. Lisa considers herself a “foodologist,” not because she has a fancy degree, but because she’s obsessed with food — how wonderful it is, and how much of it she can eat and still fit into her pants. A typical woman battling the same food issues many women struggle with every day, Lisa has tried the latest fad diets, chomps on low-calorie foods and, of course, orders everything on the side.

Kerrelyn Sparks’ first paranormal romance, How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire, zoomed out of the bat cave so fast it became Borders bestselling debut romance of 2005. Each book in the Love at Stake series has become a USAToday bestseller. When the fourth book, The Undead Next Door, landed on the New York Times bestseller list, even the Undead sat up and took notice, which made Kerrelyn a bit nervous. She lives in the Greater Houston area with her husband, children, and a house full of garlic. So far, there are no vampires in her family. Werewolves are another matter entirely.

When Sarah Matheny, creator of the popular blog www.peasandthankyou.com, decided to eliminate animal products from her diet, she knew thereʼd be skeptics. Her husband was raised on the standard American diet. Her grandpa was a butcher. Her mom was the best home cook around, with a generous pat of butter here and a crumble of bacon there. But now Sarah is a mom who wants to feed her children right. Out went the diet soda. In came the smoothies. Out went the “nutrition” bars. In came the nutritious cookies. Out went a tired, caffeine-fueled mom. In came Mama Pea. Peas and Thank You is a collection of recipes and stories from a mainstream family eating a not-so-mainstream diet. It’s filled with healthy and delicious versions of foods weʼve all grown up enjoying, but with a Mama Pea twist—no meat, lots of fresh ingredients and plenty of nutrition for growing Peas. From wholesome breakfasts to mouth-watering desserts, thereʼs plenty here to satisfy the pickiest Peas in your life. Itʼs easier than ever to whip up crowd- pleasing meals that will have the whole family asking for, “more, Peas.”

Toot A young pig-on-the-go and a globe-trotting adventurer, Toot loves to explore and is constantly on the lookout for any new challenge or untried experience. With his digital camera in tow, Toot often sends his photos as postcards to his friends at home. Puddle is the backyard explorer who, although he loves to travel, takes even greater pleasure in finding excitement closer to home. His calm demeanor provides the ballast to the whirlwind that is Toot. Puddle's biggest weakness is that his need for a routine and a plan sometimes makes it difficult for him to cope with spontaneous changes or unexpected obstacles. http://www.nickjr.com/toot-puddle/about-toot-puddle/toot-and-puddle-characters.html
